Spiritual Advice: Tarot Taboo
I have fallen pretty far into the well of wanting to practice wicca, but have the problem of not being able to be open about many things I adore.
Knowing about the taboo of purchasing tarots oneself I am having trouble on how to get my own set along side with a hand book on the cards multiple meanings.
Would creating a set for myself be better ?? If yes, what materials will help me the most in creating them ??
Thank You so much Raven - anonymous
I have great news for you. Every tarot reader I know (including myself) has purchased their own deck(s). Not a one of them (including myself) was hindered by this. The superstition/taboo that one should never purchase their own deck is just that...a superstition/taboo, and essentially a form of gatekeeping. Even so, I'm not one to tell anyone that their superstition/taboo isn't valid. But I will say that it's only valid for them. So you have to take the temperature of this one for yourself. Every belief is mutable. Any belief can be discarded if it doesn't resonate.
Is it a belief that was handed over to you, and one that you don't feel particularly strong about? Then go forth and get yourself any and all decks that you want!
Is it a belief that you want to honor? Then, honestly, I don't know all the rules around that and whether making your own deck is akin to purchasing your own, or what. But let's assume that there's no rule against making your own. There are so many ways you can go about this!
- Cardstock or Bristol and paint, or pens, or watercolor, or pencils, or mixed media...most craft stores carry cardstock that's already sized to a roughly tarot/oracle size and shape.
- You can also go digital. Use pictures that you took, or stock photography, or digital art, and then use a company like makeplayingcards.com to get it printed! I've got more info on how to do that over here in this article (living on my old website). And that's how I created my Faerie's Nature Oracle!
You could make a collage, or use words rather than images. You could modify playing cards with a sharpie! If you aren't on Tumblr already, I recommend checking out the #tarot and #tarotcommunity tags there. There are so many people in the community who have made their own decks, it might be helpful for finding inspiration to see what others have done.
Whatever route you choose, best of luck, and I wish you immense fun on your particular tarot journey.
